Today I am going to walk you through some of my all time favorite poses during engagement sessions and posing your couples. First off this is Kailee and Joel, literally the cutest human beings ever! Both J+K cut and style hair - so as you can see its already fate. Freaking hair power couple. I got to know them during a sunrise session in Utah and the temp and colors were insane. Fall was just starting to peak through the trees and the morning air was nice and crisp. The tall grass was the perfect setting for their engagement photos.
To start posing couples, I usually dislike the "posing" term because I consider myself a lifestyle, realist, documentary style photographer as you will... but back to the goods, I usually go with more traditional side by side looking in opposite directions (I call it the album cover, so typically kept with a straight face.) Then we move into some movement to warm them up. I yell out jog towards me while looking at each other and make each other laugh. Throw in a few spins and dips and boom you have some dress twirls and hair flying beauties.
It takes about 15 minutes for my couples to warm up getting used to being in front of the camera and then the magic happens. Some couples are more silly and you get move them into poses that are more organic to their personality. You can always give some prompts out to whisper in the others ear to create laughter. Some couples are very intimate and need barely any direction when showing love towards each other and I can give them basic direction and let them flow naturally. With these couples I love getting them close. I always direct moving hands and always touch each other (hair out of face, under the chin, booty whatever works.) Also laying down on a blanket with legs intertwined is great as well and I will tell them to snuggle.
For some of my go t0 creative poses the side by side faces is great. Always make sure to turn up your f-stop so you get most in focus and super sharp since your depth of field is so short. Crop in post and turn up the sharpness on the eyes! Also double exposures, hands in the sky and flip the canvas on top. Have fun with it! I recently bought fractals which is another great way to get some creative shots
My rule of thumb is either start back far away and move in close and work around. You can get so many images from just one pose. Also play with motion blurs and your surroundings. If there are words its always fun to incorporate those into your photos too.
Oh and I always always always have music playing (as long as their are not a ton of people around to disturb.) I have a great playlist on Spotify you can find me and follow, its called "Couples Dance." Engagement couple inspo on pinterest.
Any other questions just ask! I am an open book. Thank you for listening to my rant on posing couples for engagement sessions.
